Concert to benefit HHS, city library

“A Down-Home Christ­mas Concert” returns for its second year at 7 p.m. Thurs­day, Dec. 1, at Hillsboro Men­nonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe.

The benefit concert kicks off the Chamber of Com­merce’s annual Down-Home Christmas weekend, with events taking place 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.

Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the USD 410 music depart­ment and Hillsboro Public Library.

Hillsboro native David Vogel will again headline the concert. Spirit-N-Cele­bra­tion, the select vocal ensemble at Hillsboro High School under the direction of Lynn Just, will be the guest performers.

­Vogel and SNC will perform a range of Christ­mas music, from beloved classics to more recent pop hits.

Tickets are available for sale at the Cham­ber of Commerce office, Kessler Kreations and online at instaboro.com/shop.

The cost is $12 each, or $75 for a reserved table of eight. Tickets can be purchased at the door if the concert hasn’t sold out. Cheese­cake and coffee will be served.

Durham Christmas planned for Dec. 3

The city of Durham will have its annual Christmas celebration from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.

Participants can enjoy rides around town. Refresh­ments, including hot dogs, will be available at the community center. Candy sacks will be available for children.

HUMC plans child’s program Dec. 11

The Hillsboro United Methodist Church, 905 E. D St. will present a children’s Christmas program Dec. 11.

Free screening in Florence Dec. 13

Marion County Early Intervention Services is offering a free screening for children birth through 5 years old Tuesday, Dec. 13, in Florence.

Appointments will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. At the screening, development will be checked in the areas of cognitive, motor, speech and language, and social and emotional. Vision and hearing also will be screened.

This process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete. All children are welcomed, but an appointment is necessary. Call 620-382-2858 to make one.

Marion Library plans

Lunch ‘n Learn

The Marion City Library is having a Lunch ‘n Learn from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The program is about making repurposed Christmas decorations by Janell Holter.

She will show how to repurpose and update your Christmas decorations. Reservations are due Dec. 2 and tickets are $5 each.

Santa plans visit to

Marion library Dec. 3

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the Marion City Library from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, in the Santa Fe Room.

While visiting Santa, children may also make a craft. He will also visit from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, Children can also enjoy cookies and cocoa with Santa. The library is also encouraging children to write letters to Santa and drop them off at Marion City Library, 101 Library St., Marion, KS 66861. The staff will make sure Santa receives the letter so he can write them back.

Letters must be submitted by Dec. 9. For more information, call the library at 620-382-2442.

Tampa Christmas

Celebration Dec. 4

Tampa Christmas Celebration is Sunday, Dec. 4, and will feature activities from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Community Center downtown.

The agenda includes from 4-7 p.m. Santa’s helpers will be selling Christmas gifts; 5:30 p.m. Santa arrives; 5-7 p.m. is a free-will soup supper and 7-8 p.m. Bingo.
