Free Social Security, Medicare Class

The Marion County Department on Aging will offer a free social security/Medicare 101 class at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at the Hillsboro City Building.

This class is for individuals turning 65 in the coming year. The class will over the basics about Social Security, Medicare, Medicare Supplemental plans and prescription drug plans.

Call to register for the class at 620-382-3580. Registration required by Monday, Aug. 27 to allow adequate material for all who attend.

Ladies Bible study to begin Aug. 30

A community Bible study for women will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday mornings beginning on Aug. 30. The meeting place will be in the Hearth Room at 300 Prairie Point, Hillsboro.

This year’s study will focus on how special and unique God has made each of us. The name of the study is S.H.A.P.E. Call Marilyn Jost at 620-947-5983 to reserve a small $6 study guide.

ServSafe Food Handlers class

A ServSafe Food Handlers Certification Class will be offered from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on September 12 and 26 from at the Marion Community Building (203 N 3rd St).

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases.

The ServSafe® program is a national certification program designed to teach safe handling practices to people who handle and serve food to the public.

Creative Writers Fellowship Sept. 8

The Creative Writers Fellowship will meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 8 at the Hesston Public Library.

A read around will be shared on the topic “Interesting Job Experience.”

2S2S at Schaeffler House Sept. 8

2nd Saturday 2 Serve will be working on the Schaeffler House grounds 8-11 a.m. on Satuday, Sept. 8.

Anyone is welcome to come and help. Please bring your whole family and your own yard tools. We will be serving from 8-11. We are looking for period appropriate perennials and shrubs to plant.

If you have peonies or other plants you would be willing to donate, please contact Steve Fast at Hillsboro Museums, 620-947-3775, or Krista Heinrichs, 620-877-0638. Shop locally and get your plants from Serenity Gardens where Jana can help you choose the best plants for this project.

Free Developmental screening Sept. 11

A free developmental screening for children birth through age five years old will be held from 11 a.m-12 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Peabody.

At the screening, development will be checked in the areas of cognitive, motor, speech/language and social/emotional.

Vision and hearing will also be screened.

This process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete.

All children are welcome, but an appointment is necessary. Please call 620-382-2858 for an appointment.

The screening is sponsored by Marion County Early Intervention Services.
