Repairs to begin at Schaeffler House

The Hillsboro Museums received a grant of $34,923 from the Heritage Trust Fund of the Kansas State Historical Society to repair the foundation and porch columns at the William F. and Ida G. Schaeffler House.

Thrasher Basement will begin repairing the foundation Monday, June 25. Lane K. Dyck Construction Inc. will repair the porch columns afterward.

The foundation at the southwest corner of the house and the footings for the porch columns badly settled over the 108 years that the house has been in existence.

“It had finally reached a critical condition, so we are grateful that KSHS provided us a grant to do the most important work,” Steve Fast, museums coordinator, said. “The City of Hillsboro is matching 20 percent of the cost.”

The Schaeffler House was built in 1909 and is a well-preserved example of Queen-Anne-style architecture.

“We are fortunate to have such a beautiful house in our community,” Fast said. “Most of the furnishings are items that belonged to the Schaefflers.”

Visitors are welcomed Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call 620-947-3775 to make an appointment for a tour.
