Opera performances Aug. 3-5 in Marion

Three performances by Opera in the Flint Hills will take place Aug. 3-5 at the Marion Community Center, 203 N. 3rd St., Marion.

Students from all over the nation will stay at the Historic Elgin for a two-week master class designed for advanced students and young professional singers.

The students will perform at 7 p.m. Aug. 3, 7 p.m. Aug. 4 and 2 p.m. Aug. 5. The performance selections will combine opera and theater together.

Chamber to host

hot dog lunch July 25

Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce will host a free hot dog lunch starting at noon, Wednesday, July 25.

The 250 meals will be given on a first-come basis.

Group to collect items for HES children

The Hillsboro M.B. Church Second Saturday to Serve group is sponsoring “Smiles and Soles for Jesus.”

The group is asking the public to donate new or like-new condition school shoes, socks and toothbrushes for Hillsboro Elementary schoolers kindergarten through fifth grade.

Monetary donations for this project will be accepted. Donations will be distributed at enrollment time. Drop off items in the designated boxes found at Hillsboro Public Library, USD 410 Central Office and the Hillsboro M.B. Church.

SCMC seeks names

of local woodworkers

Senior Citizens of Marion County Board of Directors wants to honor woodworkers at the organization’s annual meeting on Oct. 18.

The board is seeking nominations of woodworkers who have worked with wood through carving, whittling, scrolling, wood inlays and making toys to furniture, live in Marion County, 60-years of age and are willing to attend the SCMC Annual Meeting in October.

Nominations are accepted from the public. Nomination forms are available at local senior centers or through the Marion County Department on Aging at 620-382-3580 starting July 11. Forms need to be returned to a local center or Department on Aging by Aug. 17.
