4th Annual Christmas Lights Contest

The Hillsboro Convention and Visitor’s Bureau is having an outdoor Christmas Lights Decorating Contest. Enter by Dec. 12. Judging will happen on Dec. 14 & 15 from 5-10 p.m. To register, sign up at the city office.

Goessel Christmas Giving Tree

The Citizens State Bank and the Goessel Ministerial Association are sponsoring a Christmas Giving Tree. This tree will endeavor to help with some of the expenses of Christmas for families in need.

Go to the Citizens State Bank where you can choose a tag from the tree. All the gifts will need to be brought back to the bank by Friday, December 14. For questions, contact the bank or one of the local ministers.

Night in the Barn on Dec. 8 & 9

Night in the Barn: Everyone is invited to attend and experience Night in the Barn, presented by Tabor Mennonite Church from 5 – 8 pm during the first two weekends in December (Dec. 1 & 2 and Dec. 8 & 9). Please note the new location of Papa’s Pumpkin Patch located just off of K-15 between Newton and Goessel.

Come and interact with the characters, animals, sights and sounds of this timeless tale. Enjoy this walking tour of the Nativity with family and friends. The suggested donation of $5 per person includes a hot drink and snack. Come and share in the wonder of the Christmas Story!

Developmental Screening Dec. 11

A free developmental screening for children birth through five years old on Tuesday, Dec.11 in Goessel.

At the screening, development will be checked in the areas of cognitive, motor, speech/language and social/emotional. Vision and hearing will also be screened.

Appointments will be available from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. All children are welcome, but an appointment is necessary.

Ryder Cancer Benefit Dec. 8

A cancer benefit will be from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 for Roger Ryder who was recently diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer. The free-will offering potato bar meal will be at the Zion Lutheran Parish Hall at 106 N. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro.

Brass choir concert Dec 9

The McPherson Community Brass Choir and the GHS Elbiata Singers will perform a concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec.9 at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church in Goessel.

Shop home-based businesses Dec. 11

If you would like to shop locally for your Christmas gifts, there will be an event at from 5-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec 11 in the Heritage Lobby at Tabor College.

2S2S Serving Free Pancakes Dec. 8

The 2nd Saturday 2 Serve group will be hosting a FREE Community Pancake Feed from 8-11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Gordon Mohn Community Center (Hillsboro Elementary), at 812 East A Street. It is free and open to everyone in the community. They will be serving pancakes and Dale’s sausage. You can find updated information on Facebook, on 2nd Saturday 2 Serve’s page. Girl Scout project in Tampa needs help

There are still some stars at the Tampa State Bank for the Senior Girl Scout Project. They have a Silver Tree for the Silver Stars which are various elderly in the Tampa area. There are several left. Please pick one out and return the gift by Dec. 7.

Marion Co Democrats met Dec. 1

The Marion County Democrats met on Dec. 1 in the conference room of Marion Community Center. County Chair Eileen Sieger conducted the business meeting.

New precinct people from Catlin township were introduced.

The group elected officers for the next two years. The Chair is Eileen Sieger, Vice Chair is Martin Holler and Secretary/Treasurer is Janet Bryant.

Redisticting for County Commission was discussed. Candidates are needed for the two new County Commission positions.

Democrats will meet again on January 12 in conventoin to select these two candidates. The meeting will be at 10 a.m. at the Marion Community Center.

Santa will be at HPL on Dec 15

Santa Claus will be making an appearance from 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 15 at the Hillsboro Public Library.

There will be candy as well which is sponsored by Eagle Communications.
