Classes to focus on memory

Marion County Extension will offer ?Master of Mem?ory? classes at 7 p.m. March 6, 13 and 20 in the Hillsboro City Building.

Master of Memory is a three-lesson series that provides helpful information about the brain, memory function and helpful strategies to help improve memory.

The three sessions will cover: How memory works and strategies to improve memory; the effect of medications and medical conditions on memory; and nutrition and memory function, exercise for the body and mind.

This lesson series is free of charge. Interested people should make a reservation by calling the Extension office at 620-382-2325.

 

MSM requests beef, other items

Main Street Ministries? Food Bank freezers have been empty for more than a month. Leaders are inviting local farmers to consider donating beef.

The ministry will cover processing fees. Venison, turkey or fresh produce also would be welcomed.

For the Transformation Program in the MSM apartments, the following items are needed: a twin bed, pots and pans, Tupperware, bath towels, pillows, Christian videos and DVDs, wall clocks and clock radios.

HES book fair is March 5-12

Hillsboro Elementary School will be having its annual book fair March 5-12.

A large selection of current books will be available for children and parents to purchase. Fairgoers can also watch videos, read books, win prizes and enjoy live entertainment.

The hours most days will be 3:30-4:30 p.m.; the fair will not be open Friday, March 7, because school will not be in session. The fair will be canceled Wednesday, March 12, if Trojan teams are playing in the high school state basketball tournament.

On Student Shop Day, March 6, students can purchase books at the fair during the day.

Reading Night is March 11 at HES

Hillsboro Elementary School will host its annual Family Reading Night Tues?day, March 11, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Entire families are invited to participate. The school?s book fair will be open that evening from 6:30-8:30 so parents can contribute books to their child?s classroom.

As part of the evening, Wendy?s restaurant in Hills?boro will be donating 20 percent of sales made between 4-7 p.m. to the HES library for book purchases.

Free screening in Marion March 11

Marion County Early Intervention Services will be offering a fee screening for children birth through 5 years old Tuesday, March 11, at the Marion Presbyterian Church, 610 E. Lawrence St.

Appointments will be available from 3-5:30 p.m.

At the screening, children will be checked for development in the areas of learning, motor, language and social. Vision and hearing will also be screened.

This process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete. All children are welcome, but an appointment is necessary. To make one, call 620-382-2858.

Driving cours offered March 10

The American Asso?ciation of Retired Persons is offering a defensive driving course at Hillsboro Senior Center, 212 N. Main St., from 8 a.m. to noon. March 10 and 11.

The class is not just for senior citizens, but for any licensed driver and will meet in the center for two, four-hour classes.

There is no actual driving required to complete the course and participants of the class will receive a workbook, have the opportunity for discussion and there will be no written pass/fail tests.

The cost for the class is $20 or $15 for AARP members.

Participants are required to attend both four-hour sessions in order to receive a completion certificate to present to insurance companies. Kansas is one of the few states that allows any licensed driver who takes the course to qualify for a premium reduction.

HAMA to offer Lenten luncheons

The pastors of the Hillsboro Area Ministerial Alliance invite the community to attend worship services and soup luncheons each Wednesday during the Lenten season from noon to 1 p.m., beginning March 12 through April 16

?It is the intention that persons who have a defined lunch hour will be able to worship and return to work in that allotted time,? said Morita Truman, pastor of the United Methodist Church, which will host the services at its 905 E. D St. location.

The community services will focus on a common series of events that occur during Lent, a 40-day period from Ash Wednesday to Easter. It culminates with Holy Week, the days between Palm Sunday (April 13) and Easter (April 20).

Each of the six weeks, a different pastor will lead the service.

The soup luncheon will be offered in the church?s Fellowship Hall following each service. Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the lunch.

Tabor students

to be auctioned

More than 30 Tabor College men will be auctioned off to serve the community during a ?Butler for Hire? event.

The auction begins at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Java Jays in the Tabor Student Center.

Bids will start at $1 for one hour of service; $3 for two hours and $5 for three hours. Groups of three student will also be available with bids starting at $6.

The event is a fundraiser for the Tabor Multi-Cultural Student Union.

Everyone in the community is welcome to attend and buy a student.

Exhibitors sought for health fair

The Marion County Health Department, in conjunction with St. Luke Hos?pital and Living Center and Hillsboro Community Hos?pital, is seeking exhibitors for the 2014 Marion County Health Fair planned for Saturday, March 29.

The fair, which will last from 8 a.m. to noon, will showcase wellness services available in Marion County.

To become an exhibitor, or for more information, contact Sarah at the Marion County Health Department at 620-382-2550 by 5 p.m. March 10.

Commodities to arrive March 12

The U.S. Department of Agriculture commodities are to arrive at Marion County senior centers and Hillsboro Main Street Ministries Wednesday, March 12.

Each site will distribute to the public according to its schedule, which may not be the same day as arrival.

Check with the local distribution center in your community for the day and time of distribution to the public.

If no commodities are left at your site, call the Marion County Department on Aging at 620-382-3580 to find out where commodities are available.

Hymn sing slated

March 9 at HMBC

The monthly community hymn sing will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe.

The event includes singing, scripture reading and prayer. Those attending will also have an opportunity to select favorite hymns.

The theme of this month?s gathering is ?God Our Creator and Sustainer.?

Sheila Litke, pianist, is directing the hymn sing.
