Reading program to begin in Marion

Marion City Library’s summer reading program, “All Aboard! Keep on Track With Reading,” will begin June 13 through July 13.

Janet Marler, library director, said preschool children ages 3 to 5, and students through eighth grade, can win prizes for books or pages they have read. Prizes will be awarded throughout the program as goals are met.

Children can register anytime for the program. Teens and adults also will be included in the program. For every book the teenagers and adults read, they may enter for a weekly prize drawing.

“We are also including preschool children,” Marler said. “Parents need to read 20 books to their child in order for them to receive two prizes.”

StoryTime June 15 at Marion library

StoryTime at Marion City Library for children ages 3 to 5 will be from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. starting June 15 at 101 Library St.

With limited space, Janet Marler, library director, encourages parents/guardians to reserve a place soon.

Marion church will celebrate 50 years

Good News Christian Church of Marion will celebrate its 50th anniversary Saturday, July 28, through Sunday, July 29.

Meeting and greeting will kick-off the celebration at 3 p.m. July 28 at Morning Star Ranch near Florence. A barbecue dinner has been scheduled that same day beginning at 5:30 p.m. A time of storytelling, reminiscing and history will follow the meal. Sunday will include morning worship followed by a fellowship meal and group pictures at the church.

Summer reading June 21 in Hillsboro

Hillsboro Public Library’s summer reading program begins June 21 and is open to 3-year-olds through those finishing fifth grade.

For children ages 3 and 4, the program is from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.; pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; first and second grades, 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and third through fifth grades, 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Dream Big—Read,” and will be Thursdays, June 21 and 28; Wednesday, July 11, and Thursday, July 19.

Delora Kaufman, children’s librarian, said a magician will perform at 4:30 p.m. July 11 at the Hillsboro Elementary School cafeteria.

The program cost is $4 and fees are due the first day of class. Kaufman and Tammy Daniels will be leading the sessions with Hannah Bartel serving as assistant.

‘Chat and Dine’ set June 9 at lake hall

The Chat and Dine potluck dinner at Marion County’s Lake Hall begins at 6:30 p.m. June 9.

Paul White, one of the coordinators, said the lake hall will be decorated in an Hawaiian theme.

“Our guest speaker will be Cynthia Blount, who is the director of the Marion Historical Museum,” he said. “She will be presenting information about the history of the museum and some of its exhibits.”

USDA commodities to arrive June 14

The U.S. Department of Agriculture commodities will arrive at Marion County senior centers June 14, according to information from the Marion County Department on Aging.

New income guidelines as of April 1, which include household size and maximum monthly gross income: one person, $1,211; two, $1,640; three, $2,069; and four $2,498. For each additional family member, add $429.

Each site will distribute commodities according to its schedule. For specific information on when items are available, contact the local center. If no commodities are available at a particular site, call the Department on Aging, 620-382-3580.

Church to lead trip to New Mexico

Eastmoor United Methodist Church of Marion is sponsoring a missions trip for up to 36 people to the “Four Corners” area near Farm­ington, N.M., Aug. 4-12.

Anyone in Marion County from age 101?2 to adult is welcomed to participate in this effort to assist at the Navaho United Methodist Center, which serves women and families of domestic abuse.

The cost per person will be no more than $300, including transportation. The experience will include a side trip by bus of up to 150 miles to a location to be determined. Organizers would like a deposit of $75 by June 17.
