Open gym begins Jan. 17 in Marion

The Marion Parks & Recreation Board offers the public an open-gym opportunity on Sundays, starting Jan. 17.

The gym at Marion Ele?mentary School will open from 3-5 p.m. for elementary and middle school students, and from 5-7 p.m. for high school students and adults.

PAT to offer ?PJ Reading? in January

Marion County Parents as Teachers and Rachel Boden, a conscious disci?pline trainer, will offer hour-long PAT ?PJ Read?ing? sessions for play, movement and reading at public libraries around the county during January.

The free sessions, plan?ned for families with children birth to age 3, are based on the book, ?Sophie Is a S.T.A.R.? by Becky A. Bailey, an expert in childhood education and developmental psychology.

The times and library locations are as follows: Hillsboro, 6-7 p.m. Jan. 18; Marion, 6-7 p.m. Jan. 21; Goessel, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Jan. 22; Peabody, 10-11 a.m. Jan. 23; and Burns, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Jan. 29.

SNC fundraiser for Valentine?s Day

The Hillsboro High School select vocal ensemble Spirit-N-Celebration will conduct a fundraiser for Valen?tine?s Day.

The group will be in the community Friday, Feb. 12, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to perform Singing Valentines.

Patrons may purchase a Singing Valentine from any SNC member. Order by coming to the HHS office and filling out an order form with payment or ordering at the SNC Night performance Feb. 1. Phone orders will not accepted.

One Valentine will cost $10, orders are due by Feb. 5; a Valentine with a fresh rose will cost $15, orders are due Feb. 1. Ordering instructions, song choices and a list of SNC members can be found on the choir page of the school website under the Activities tab.

Parenting class set

Feb. 8 in Peabody

A six-hour parenting class for managing emotional mayhem is geared for parents, grandparents, foster parents, childcare providers and teachers.

The class is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Peabody-Burns High School, 810 N. Sycamore St., Peabody.

Parkview to host hymn sing Jan. 24

The public is invited to a hymn sing at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 in the Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church, 610 S. Main St., Hillsboro.

David Martin, worship pastor, will lead the congregational singing, giving the audience the opportunity to choose a favorite hymn.

Jeff Lee, pastor of the Aulne Methodist Church, will present a devotional.

Library offers help with enrollment

Hillsboro Public Library will host assistance for those needing to enroll in health insurance. Open enrollment closes Jan. 31.

Assistance will be provided by Health Ministries Clinic of Newton from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in the library at 120 E. Grand Ave.

Be sure to bring for every member of the household: an active email address and password; birth dates; Social Security numbers; income information such as W-2, 2012 tax return and paycheck stubs; immigration documents and any information about employer-covered insurance.
