Entries welcomed for chess event

The Hillsboro Chess Guild will host its annual K-12 chess tournament Saturday, March 3, in the Hillsboro Middle School gym.

The Kansas Scholastic Chess Association tournament is free to all Hillsboro USD 410 students; other students may enter for a $7 fee by Thursday, March 1, deadline.

Team trophies and individual medals will be awarded immediately following the tournament.

Marshmallow roast supervisors to meet

All volunteer supervisors taking part in the Guinness Book of World Records Marshmallow Roast event are urged to attend a meeting at 7:30 p.m. March 8 at the Marion County Lake Hall.

Steve Hudson, superintendent of Marion County Park and Lake, is also needing notary publics. The marshmallow roast is scheduled for March 24.

Daddy Olympics planned March 3

Daddy Olympics, a come-and-go active games and swimming event, is planned from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. March 3 at the Marion Aquatic Center and Sports Complex, 104 N. Thorp St.

The event is open to men and children ages birth to 5 and includes dads, grandfathers, uncles or neighbors. It is a time for mothers to enjoy the extra time alone.

Younger children are urged to have swimmers diapers, towels and dry clothes.

The Marion County Parents as Teachers, Marion County Head Start and Safe Kids are sponsoring the event.

Country Stitchers meeting March 5

The Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m. March 5 at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church, 905 East D St.

The meeting will include McPherson Quilt Guild and Cleo Mounday of Wichita will present ?Finding Color in the World Around You.?

 

Benefit meal set for Schmidt family

Strassburg Baptist Church is sponsoring a benefit meal from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 5 for Troy and Eileen Schmidt to help defray the costs of travel and other expenses related to their daughter’s medical condition.

World Day of Prayer is March 2

Peabody Senior Center is hosting a World Day of Prayer observance at 12:15 p.m. March 2 and all men and women are invited.

The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women of all nations who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday of March. Each year a different country serves as the writer of the worship service. This year the women of Malaysia developed the theme, ?Let Justice Prevail.?

Celtic Celebration March 3 in Marion

Marion Main Street Merchants, PRIDE and Marion Advancement Campaign are sponsoring a Celtic Celebration in the Marion Community Center in Marion starting with a buffet at 6:30 p.m.

Entertainment will include Wichita Cadedonia Pipes and Drums, Cory?Academy of Irish Dancing and Knocknasheega Celtic Band.

The dinner is $15 per person and includes dinner and music or $5 for music only with balcony seats.

Trio will recreate old-time radio

Leland and Dilores Suder?man of North Newton and Stephen Vincent of Hillsboro will present ?Give the Winds a Mighty Voice,? an effort to return participants to the golden age of radio, during the Tabor College Learning in Retirement program that begins at 9:50 a.m. Friday.

The threesome will use stories and music to recreate the ?Old Fashioned Revival Hour? radio program with Charles E. Fuller and Rudy Atwood.

Vincent moved to Hillsboro from Riverside, Calif., in 2007 and became involved in music ministry in area churches. He is on the staff of First United Metho?dist Church of Wichita, where he directs choirs and plays piano and organ. His contributions can be seen on KAKE-TV, Channel 10, at 11 a.m. each Sunday.

Since 2008 Vincent has been director of the Parkside Voices, a growing group of older adults who meet weekly for rehearsals at Park Village, and he has accompanied the 320-voice Kan?sas Mennonite Men?s Chorus.

Learning in Retirement meets in the lobby of the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center. Registration for the entire series of presentations is $15 per semester for an individual or $29 per couple. A single session is $4 per peron.

LIR participants can eat lunch in the college cafeteria following the program for an additional fee of $4.
