HES book fair is March 5-12

Hillsboro Elementary School will be having its annual book fair March 5-12.

A large selection of current books will be available for children and parents to purchase. Fairgoers can also watch videos, read books, win prizes and enjoy live entertainment.

The hours most days will be 3:30-4:30 p.m.; the fair will not be open Friday, March 7, because school will not be in session. The fair will be canceled Wednesday, March 12, if Trojan teams are playing in the high school state basketball tournament.

On Student Shop Day, March 6, students can purchase books at the fair during the day.

Lunch ?n Learn Slated March 4

The Marion City Library is having a Lunch ?n Learn from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the new Santa Fe room.

Jana Dalke of Serenity Gardens will present a program about gardening and new plants.

The cost is $5 for lunch and reservations are needed by Feb. 28.

Daddy Olympics this Saturday

The annual Daddy Olym?pics event for men and children is planned for 9:30-11 p.m. Satur?day at the Marion Aquatic Center and Sports Complex, 104 N. Thorp.

Sponsored by Marion County Parents as Teachers, Marion County Head Start and Safe Kids, the free event is for kids from birth to age 5 with a supportive adult male of their choice.

Reading Night is March 11 at HES

Hillsboro Elementary School will host its annual Family Reading Night Tues?day, March 11, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Entire families are invited to participate. The school?s book fair will be open that evening from 6:30-8:30 so parents can contribute books to their child?s classroom.

As part of the evening, Wendy?s restaurant in Hills?boro will be donating 20 percent of sales made between 4-7 p.m. to the HES library for book purchases.

Free screening in Marion March 11

Marion County Early Intervention Services will be offering a fee screening for children birth through 5 years old Tuesday, March 11, at the Marion Presbyterian Church, 610 E. Lawrence St.

Appointments will be available from 3-5:30 p.m.

At the screening, children will be checked for development in the areas of learning, motor, language and social. Vision and hearing will also be screened.

This process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete. All children are welcome, but an appointment is necessary. To make one, call 620-382-2858.


Driving course offered April 16

The American Asso?ciation of Retired Persons is offering a defensive driving course at Hillsboro Senior Center, 212 N. Main St., from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 16 and 17, on each of those days.

The class is not just for senior citizens, but for any licensed driver and will meet in the center for two-four hour classes.

There is no actual driving required to complete the course and participants of the class will receive a workbook, have the opportunity for discussion and there will be no written pass/fail tests.

The cost for the class is $14 or $12 for AARP members.

Participants are required to attend both four-hour sessions in order to receive a completion certificate to present to insurance companies. Kansas is one of the few states that allows any licensed driver who takes the course to qualify for a premium reduction. Everyone listed on the policy must complete the course in order to receive the reduction.

Dr. Seuss stories will be March 1

The Marion City Library is having a Dr. Seuss Birth?day StoryTime from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. March 1 for children ages 3 to 10 years old.

The Happy Hustler 4-H Reading Group will be reading Seuss stories, and the children will make Seuss snacks and crafts.

Quilt guild to meet March 3

The Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7 p.m. March 3 at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church in Hillsboro.

The speaker will be Carol Lee of Minneapolis with ideas from her shop, ?No Place Like Home.?
