Brass choir concert at Goessel church

The 17-piece McPherson Community Brass Choir, under the direction of Jerry Toews, will present the annual Christmas Brass Concert at 6:30 pm. Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Alexander­wohl Mennonite Church, 1304 Kansas Highway 15, a mile north of Goessel.

In addition, the Goessel High School Elbiata Singers will perform Christmas Carols. Also performing are Braden, Kyle and Karen Unruh playing a trumpet duet with pipe organ.

The public is welcomed to experience this evening of fun. An offering will be gathered for the Goessel Minis­terial Alliance.

TC fine arts center to be dedicated Dec. 9

Tabor College will host a dedication ceremony for the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and open house to follow.

To celebrate the finishing of the largest building project in school history, Tabor has scheduled an elaborate program for the afternoon.

The dedication address will be delivered by Del Gray, a professor at Tabor.

At 7 p.m. the following day, the Tabor College Ora­torio and Alumni Chorus and Community Orchestra will perform Handel’s “Messiah.”

The event will include a hired ensemble comprised mostly of players from the Wichita Symphony Orches­tra and more than 90 alumni voices. More than 150 voices will be in the chorus when combined with Tabor choirs, and the orchestra will number 35 players.

Holiday craft night offered Dec. 8

The Hillsboro Recreation Commission will host a Christmas Craft Night, led by Greta Wiebe and Dana Maxfield, for women ages 18 and older. It will start at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, in the Scout House, located in Memorial Park.

Class members will make a Christmas embroidery-hoop wreath and a set of three felt Christmas trees and gift tags.

The cost is $30 per person and is due to the Hillsboro city office by Friday, Dec. 1. A minimum of 15 women need to sign up to have the class; the class size is limited to 24 participants.

Free child screening in Goessel Dec. 12

Marion County Early Intervention Services will offer a free screening for children from birth through age 5 on Tuesday, Dec. 12, in Goessel. Appointments will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At the screening, development will be checked in the areas of cognitive, motor, speech and language, and social and emotional. Vision and hearing also will be screened.

This process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete. All children are welcomed, but an appointment is necessary. To make one, 620-382-2858 for an appointment.

Country Christmas

at Spring Valley

Spring Valley Mennonite Church is having services for “Christmas in the Country” during December, which will focus on the Christmas songs from the gospel of Luke.

• Dec. 10: “Zacharia’s Son of Hope”

• Dec. 17: “The Angels’ Song of Good News”

• Dec. 24: “Simeon’s Son of Adoration”

The worship services begin at 10:30 a.m. with Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. The church is located at 2896 Frontier Road in Canton.

HMHS to present Christmas concerts

Hillsboro Middle High School Music Department invites the public to two Christmas concerts on Tues­day, Dec. 12, in the USD 410 Auditorium.

The middle school concert will begin at 6:30 p.m., with performances by the sixth-grade choir, sixth-grade band, seventh- and eighth-grade choir, and seventh- and eighth-grade band.

The high school concert will begin at 7:45 p.m. and will include performances by the concert band, concert choir, and Spirit-N-Celebration.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for each concert because of limited seating.
