Free child screening Dec. 11 in Florence


Marion County Early Inter­vention Services will offer a free screening for children birth through 5 years old Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the Christian Church, 334 W. 5th, Florence.

Appointments will be available from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

At the screening, children will be checked in the learning, motor, language and social areas. Vision and hearing also will be screened.

The process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete. All children are welcome, but an appointment is necessary. To make one, call 620-382-2858.


Library offering used books for sale


Hillsboro Public Library will be having a used-book sale in the hall outside of the library through Dec. 21.

All books are priced at $1 each. Selections will change on a daily basis.

“Hillsboro public library believes a book is a gift you can use again and again,” said librarian Cathleen Fish.

Proceeds from the book sale will be used to purchase new books for the library.


Silent auction to benefit charities


A silent auction for gift baskets benefiting local charities is taking place until Dec. 15.

Baskets are located in businesses around Hillsboro. A list of locations is available in participating businesses.

Proceeds will be donated to the winner’s choice of Main Street Ministries, Hillsboro Senior Center or Marion County Boys and Girls Club.


HMS to present Dec. 10 concert


The Hillsboro Middle School Fine Arts Department invites community members to its annual Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in the USD 410 auditorium.

The concert will feature bands and choirs from grades six through eight. Selections to be performed include “Dance of the Tumblers,” “Carol of the Drum,” “Joy! Joy! The Child is Born” and “Holly Jolly Christ­mas.”

New this year will be a display of HMS student artwork in the auditorium lobby. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early due to limited seating.


Santa to visit at Marion library


Santa Claus will visit from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 8 at Marion City Library.

This is a “come and go” event with children making Christmas ornaments.

In addition to Santa Claus coming, the library is also accepting letters to Santa. All letters must be received by Dec. 12.

Hillsboro blood drive set for Dec. 7


A community blood drive is planned for 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Parkview Men­nonite Brethren Church, 610 S. Main, Hillsboro.

Citing the increased demand for blood because of recent natural disasters, organizers encourage people age 17 and older to make an appointment to donate by visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-733-2767.
