Tampa Christmas event set Dec. 8

Santa Claus will be visiting Tampa beginning at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 8. In addition, a soup supper by donation is from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. followed by the Cottonwood River Band Concert at 6:30 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

 

Tabor ?Messiah? program Sunday

The Tabor College Ora?torio Chorus, Alumni Chorus and Community Orchestra will join forces to present the annual ?Messiah? performance at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe.

Featured soloists from Tabor will be Robert Howell, Olivia Kliewer, Trevor Morris, Sara Sagner and Nathan Vogel. Also featured as soloists are alum Aaron Stepanek and current faculty members Janie Brokenicky and Holly Swartzendruber.

The performance will be under the direction of Bradley Vogel, professor of choral music at Tabor College.

?In Hillsboro, this annual event is considered the start of Christmas season and is a wonderful tradition,? Vogel said. ?It?s a great piece of music with a rich message and is a centerpiece of the music department.?

 

Free screening in Florence Dec. 10

Marion County Early Intervention Services will be offering a free screening for children birth through 5 years old Tuesday, Dec. 10, in Florence. Appointments will be available from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

At the screening, development will be checked in the areas of learning, motor, language and social areas. Vision and hearing also will be screened. This process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete.

All children are welcome, but an appointment is necessary. To make one, call 620-382-2858.

 

LMC seeks people for 2014 classes

Leadership Marion County is taking applications for the series of nine classes which will begin in February 2014.

Classes will meet every other Thursday in various locations within Marion County with one trip to Topeka to meet with state representatives.

The goal of LMC is in developing unity among the communities of the county, identifying current and future leaders, examining issues facing the county and encouraging service at local and county levels.

Applications are available at the Marion County Court?house, Florence City Hall, Goessel City Hall, Hillsboro Library, Tampa State Bank in Tampa or Burns Library.

The deadline to submit applications is Dec. 15.

Blood drive slated Dec. 9 at Parkview

The American Red Cross will be at Parkview Menno?nite Church, 610 S. Main St., Hillsboro, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9 for a community blood drive.

Eligibility requirements for donating blood include a person being 17 years of age, or 16 with parental permission. They also must meet weight and height requirements with a minimum weight of 110 pounds or more depending on height, and they be in generally good health.

Anyone planning to donate blood is also asked to bring either a Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive identification.

Hillsboro auxiliary to have bake sale

The Hillsboro Com?munity Hospital Auxiliary volunteers are having a bake sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in the HCH lobby, 701 S. Main St.

In addition to baked items, there will be new or used books on sale.

The auxiliary members invite everyone to check out the ongoing book sale with the display in the HCH north lobby.

Connie Weber will also have her shelf display in the hallway and will take orders for Christmas or other gifting needs.

Santa plans visit to Marion library

Santa will be visiting Marion City Library, 101 Library, Saturday, Dec. 7.

In addition, Santa will be accepting letters through Dec. 14, and he will write everyone back.

Santa?s visit is a come-and-go event and will include Christ?mas crafts from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Canton Christmas set for Saturday

The Prairie Trail scenic byway celebrates ?Christmas in Canton? with activities to include American Legion: Pearl Harbor Day, breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. and a bake sale.

Children are also encouraged to visit Santa from 9 a.m. to noon, along with everyone invited to the Stars and Stripes Military Museum Open House from 8 a.m. to noon, the historic jail, area church bake sales, senior center soup supper from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the Prairie Trail Byway.
