Library a ?giver? for World Book Night

Hillsboro Public Library has been chosen as a ?giver? for the upcoming World Book Night.

Library board members will be distributing copies of the book ?Peace Like a River,? by Leif Enger, to the public at random at various Hillsboro businesses Monday, April 23.

World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books where tens of thousands of people share books with others in their communities across America to spread the joy and love of reading, according to Cathy Fish, librarian.

Broadband session set for April 19

Peabody Township Library will host a broadband Internet town hall Meeting starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 19, with a light supper.

The discussion will begin promptly at 6:30 pm. Ending time is anticipated to be 8:30 p.m.

The meeting is sponsored by North Central Kansas Libraries System and the Institute for Civic Discourse of Kansas State University.

To ensure adequate seating and food, RSVP by calling the library at 620-983-2502 by noon April 19.

 

Library to sell books April 20-21

Hillsboro Public Library will participate in the City Wide Garage sale by hosting a book sale Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21.

The sale will be in City Hall during library business hours.

 

Brown to speak on poverty at LIR

Denise Brown of Hills?boro, will address the topic ?What Everyone Should Know About Poverty? Friday, April 20, at Learning in Retirement.

Brown had the opportunity to train with Ruby Payne, author of ?Bridges Out of Poverty,? and now shares with churches and teachers about Payne?s research into how social class affects the way we perceive?and often misperceive?others.

Learning in Retirement meets at 9:50 a.m. in the lobby of the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center on the Tabor College campus. Registration for the series of presentations is $15 per semester for an individual or $29 per couple. Admission to an individual session is $4.

LIR participants may eat lunch in the cafeteria following the program for a discounted fee of $4.

Author to speak on Eisenhower book

Author Roy Bird will talk about his book, ?Little Ike: Dwight D. Eisenhower?s Abilene Boyhood,? at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at the Marion City Library.

The book about Eisenhower?s youth is more than a children?s picture book.

?It is filled with the rich biography of one of America?s most remembered presidents,? librarian Janet Marler said. ?Included is a section for older readers taking a deeper look into his entire career plus helpful references and Internet links for further research.?

Bird grew up near Abilene while Eisenhower was president. Quotes in the book come from Eisenhower?s own book, letters and other primary sources.

Adults and children are encouraged to attend the informative program and book signing.

Defensive driving class set April 30

AARP is sponsoring a defensive driving class from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 30 and May 1 at the Hillsboro Senior Center.

The class is not just for senior citizens, but for any licensed driver. No actual driving is required to complete the course and participants of the class will receive a work book and have the opportunity for discussion.

No grade will be given for the course. The cost to register is $14 or $12 for AARP members.

Girl Scouts seek donations for sale

Hillsboro Junior/Cadette Girl Scout troops are having a garage sale May 5 and are needing donations.

Anyone interested in donating is asked to call Brenda Bernhardt at 620-382-6932 or Joy Dalke at 620-947-4002 by May 2 to arrange for any items to be picked up.
