A 47-year-old Marion County man was sentenced April 20 to more than 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to sex crimes.
According to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, Newell was sentenced to 177 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections by Chief Judge Michael Powers in the Marion County District Court.
?Newell pleaded guilty in March to two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14 years of age,? Schmidt said. ?The crimes occurred in March 2014.?
The investigation was conducted by the Marion Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Schmidt said.
Those two agencies also received assistance from the Marion County Sheriff?s office and Exploited and Missing Child Unit in Wichita, he added.
Newell was initially charged with one count of rape, 11 counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim.
Initial charges were filed Dec. 19, and according to the complaint, the allegations were that Newell committed the acts on an 8-year-old girl, at that time. The charges of aggravated indecent liberties alleges Newell engaged in lewd fondling or touching of the now 10-year-old.
Newell, who was a Marion County dispatcher and also an EMT and volunteer firefighter will remain housed at the McPherson County Jail until he is transferred to prison.
