New mayor and council member sworn at Florence

New mayor Greg Winn and council member Trayce Warner were sworn in at the April 16 meeting of the Florence City Council.

Janet Robinson was then sworn in as interim city clerk and court clerk with a retroactive pay increase to $10 per hour from the time she took over Darla Gore?s duties.

Lee Leiker, Rex Savage and Chris Sprowls were sent by the USD 408 school board to gauge the interest of the council in the city taking ownership of the old school gymnasium. The council will review the proposal and let the school board know whether the city will accept the property for $1.

The council also heard one city well has not been certified. The council decided to have the water tested in case it needs to be used. If it were used, the city would send a ?boil water advisory? with the water bills.

In other matters, the council:

  • approved a request by Del Leeds, ADA compliance officer, and Jackie Sigwing, FlorenceKS.com Web designer, to hire someone to upgrade the Web site for a cost of $500.
  • accepted the sale of the city-owned Christian Church parking lot to the church for $1.
  • will look into barricading a collapsing building to stop people from entering the area. A letter will be sent to the landowner to try to get a timeframe on structural repairs.
  • heard that the fire department will be purchasing three new PASS devices to go with airpacks being acquired through the Marion County Chiefs Association.
