Male arrested for alleged plot

A 20-year-old Hillsboro man was arrested April 14 after allegedly plotting to burglarize the home of Ron Herbel, a Hillsboro man, and then allegedly kidnap him.

But when his accomplice, identified as Alexander Barlow, supposedly changed his mind, Patric G. Patterson, purported to have struck him, and threatened to kill him if he told anyone, said Police Chief Dan Kinning.

“Barlow called 911 to report criminal activity involving Patterson,” Kinning said.

“He told officers that Patterson asked him to assist with a home invasion at the (Ron) Herbel residence.”

The initial plan was to enter Herbel’s home while he was there with the intention of stealing his money and car keys, and then coerce him with a knife into giving up his personal financial information, he said.

The last step in this alleged plan was to then kidnap Herbel, Kinning said.

The plan was thwarted when Barlow apparently decided he didn’t want to follow through with it.

Patterson, who lives in the 300 block of Birch Street, was taken into custody by the Hillsboro Police Department and Marion County Sheriff’s office, Kinning said.

No other details regarding bond or first appearance on Patterson were available at press time.
