More than 75 children and parents watched as magician Eric Vaughn of Kansas City performed a variety of tricks using ?Bob the Bird? and ?Bingo the Duck? Wednesday at Hillsboro Elementary School.

Born in Baldwin City, Vaughn said his love of magic started when he was 10 years old.

?This isn?t a hobby for me,? he said. ?I perform over 150 shows a year and sometimes three or four of those in a day.?

In addition to performing for children at various library summer reading programs throughout the Midwest, he said he also does presentations for major corporations, fine arts organizations, schools and even private birthday parties.

Vaughn said he also enjoys audience participation.

?I laugh and have a great time with my volunteers and that always puts everyone at ease,? he said.

His illusions included card, rope and balloon tricks, mind-reading with the help of his duck, and many other entertaining acts.

Introducing himself as ?Eric in the purple shoes,? the audience laughed at his comedic approach to magic. Along with his magic, Vaughn said he is a professional drummer, too.

As for Wednesday?s audience in Hillsboro, he said he was happy to see such a good turnout of people.

During the month of July, Vaughn performed in Bonner Springs, Kinsley, Johnson City, Dighton, Ness City, Oakley, Junction City, Pratt, Marion, Harrisonville and Edgerton, Mo., Bassett, Neb., and Highland.

Wednesday?s show was sponsored by Hillsboro Public Library?s Summer Reading Program and prior to Vaughn?s presentation, four young people were recognized for their commitment to reading.

Those children were: Emma Bartel, Rylie Driggers, Chance Williams and Noah Bartel.
