Hillsboro council approves board appointments

The Hillsboro City Council approved several mayoral appointments to civic boards during a brief meeting Tuesday, Jan. 20.

Shelley Plett was approved for a first term on the Library Board.

Karen Wiebe, Sharon Boese and Warren Priel were reappointed to full terms on the Tree Board and Dale Dalke to fill an unexpired term.

Grant Overstake, Harvey Ray and Gari-Anne Patzwald were appointed to the Planning and Development Commission.

Toward the end of the meeting, the mayor raised the question of whether term limits should be applied to members of civic boards and commissions.

The council agreed that term limits could involve more citizens in civic work and bring fresh ideas to the respective boards. An ordinance initiating term limits may be presented for discussion at a later date.

In other business, the council:

n approved the following pay estimates for the wastewater lagoon system project: $21,895 to Evans, Bierly, Hutchison & Associates for engineering services, $5,550 to Mayer Specialty Services for sludge removal, and $310,070 to APAC-Kansas for construction.

n approved the following pay estimates for the PAPI lights project at the airport: $8,957 to Reiss & Goodness Engineers, and $85,818 to Wichita Electric.

n approved reimbursement of $875 from the Public Commission to pay the law firm of Triplett, Woolf & Garrelson for professional services related to the sale of the local hospital.
