Former Marion Co. resident honored

Former Lehigh resident, Pete Goering, was one of three 2019 inductees into the Topeka Shawnee County Sports Hall of Fame. The induction ceremonies were held on June 26 at the Ramada Downtown Hotel and Convention Center in Topeka.

Goering, who died in 2009 at the age of 60 after a battle with cancer, had a long, storied career with The Topeka Capital-Journal as a sports beat writer, columnist, sports editor and executive editor.

Goering’s peers voted him the Kansas sportswriter of the year five times. He is a member of the Washburn Athletics Hall of Fame.

“Pete was a pillar to his family, to his friends, to his profession,″ former Capital-Journal publisher Mark Nusbaum said after Goering’s death in ’09. “As you would expect, he was brave and courageous to the very end and, as usual, a wonderful role model for all of us.″

Pete was the son of Peter and Mary Goering, graduated from Lehigh High School and attended Bethel College before graduating from Kansas State University’s School of Journalism.

Family members from this area who attended the induction included Deanne (Goering) Duerksen, Shannon (Duerksen) Davis, and Craig Duerksen.
