Florence woman killed in three-vehicle accident

A 50-year-old Florence woman died Monday in a three-vehicle crash at U.S. Highway 50 (milepost 284.7) and East Lake Road, east of Newton.

Roberta Ann Winter was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was taken to the Sedg?wick County Forensic Science Center, according to Kansas Highway Patrol officials.

The other two drivers reported no injuries.

The accident happened at about 5:10 p.m. when Luke M. Schmidt, 30, of Socorro, N.M., driving a 1998 Honda was eastbound on U.S. 50 and stopped waiting to turn left on East Lake Road.

For an unknown reason, a KHP official said, Winter?s vehicle, a 2001 Ford Taurus, attempted to pass Schmidt?s Honda on the left.

Winter struck the rear of Schmidt?s car and, in turn, his car was pushed to the right, causing Winter?s vehicle to spin into the westbound lane of traffic and hit a 2012 International semi tractor driven by Randy Alando, 41, of Kansas City, Mo.

All three drivers were wearing seat belts.

Winter?s vehicle was removed by D&D Towing in Newton. The other two vehicles were towed by Auto House in Marion.

No other details were available at press time.

If funeral arrangements are received, the information will appear in ?Breaking News? on the Free Press website: hillsborofreepress.com.
