Ben Wiens, Erin Brubaker and Lauren Henderson work as a team on their roller-coaster project as part of a competitive event Monday at the Hillsboro Middle School gymnasium. The activity was part of the Extended Learning Program provided by the Marion County Special Education Cooperative. Seven three-person teams comprised of students from the five school districts of Marion County and three students from Butler County participated in the event. Ben is an eighth-grader and Erin, a seventh-grader at Goessel Junior High, while Lauren is a fourth-grader at Hillsboro Elementary School. The teams were given an hour to construct a roller-coaster track for their marble; extra points were awarded for turns and jumps. In the afternoon, the teams were challenged to design and build a ?Rube Goldberg? type of contraption. Providing direction for the event was the SEEDS program at Wichita State University. The acronym stands for ?Science & Engineering Education Development for Students,? a student organization that seeks to generate interest in engineering among children.
