Commissioners say ?do it right? when it comes to road rebuild

?The most important thing is to do the job right,? Marion County Commis?sion Chairman Dan Holub said at the Thursday payday meeting.

He was referring to the road and bridge department applying large gravel to rebuild washed out bases on county roads.

Road and Bridge Director Randy Crawford said the costs keep climbing to rebuild and maintain roads.

It is likely to take 100 tons of rock per mile at $9.78 a ton to continue the 10 miles of 140th west from Aulne, and then on south on Paw?nee to U.S. Highway 50, he said.

The commissioners agreed that whether the surface is gravel or blacktop, it?s most important for the road and bridge department to continue to do the job right.

Holub said that?s true even to the extent of stopping at a point to wait for money to continue from next year?s budget rather than thinning out materials to complete a project.

The commissioners have reiterated several times that with continued reductions in state budget allocations for counties, they could be faced next year with raising the mill levy just to keep the county budget at its current level.

Crawford said he may come back to the commissioners to discuss the hard decision of when and where to cut off gravel this year.

It looks likely that a large volume offer of crushed concrete from one person may be too hard of a substance to apply to roads to supplement rock, Crawford said.

He said he will have to consult with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about what to do about a bridge at the junction of 180th and the Cottonwood River, where water is eroding the bank at the southeast corner of a bridge in a large swirl pool.

Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro was awarded a transfer fuel bid of $16,888 for 5,000 gallons of diesel and 3,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline over a competitive bid of $17,135 from Cardie Oil Inc. of Tampa.

County Clerk Tina Spen?cer announced a payday payout total of $1,208,682.67 with $430,454.23 designated for payroll.

She reported sales tax receipts from the state collected in February, and disbursed to the counties in April, of $52,469.17 in regular sales tax and $45,783.85 in jail bond sales tax.
