Commissioners address ?wish list?

The Marion County Commis?sion?s Monday meeting turned into a ?someday over the rainbow? session for proposals people would like to see happen that the county doesn?t have funding to support.

For instance, Cecil Aska overseeing needs for the Kansas Eighth Judicial District, which includes Marion County, said there is a need for more secured access to the courthouse not only for the judicial offices but for places like the clerk?s office, treasurer?s office and the appraiser?s office?places where irate citizens can become threatening to county personnel.

Suggestions for such a safety measure varied all the way from a sheriff?s deputy on hand in the courthouse halls to an airport security-type booth for courthouse visitors to be checked through.

Transfer Station Director Rollin Schmidt and the commissioners talked around higher acquisition of Dumpsters for recycling that they suspect might vastly cut down on the county?s waste stream that goes into landfill.

Road and Bridge Director Randy Crawford in part got his wishes when the commissioners directed him to proceed with investigating the purchase of a used heavy-equipment tire-changing truck to replace the county?s heavily worn truck on the Kansas Purple Wave surplus equipment site.

The commissioners at least inspired Road and Bridge shop foreman Tom Holub during a discussion about replacing a shop door by verifying that they, too, would like someday?when other building projects have been paid for?to look at building a new road and bridge maintenance garage.

Marion County insurance agents who share in the county?s coverage?Kakim Kunantaev, Richard Nickel and Casey Case?renewed the county?s property insurance for an annual premium of $155,235. Commissioners Randy Dallke and Roger Fleming voted for the recommendation; Commissioner Dan Holub was absent.

Dallke, who began an annual tenure as commission chairman, said that although the premium increase was $40,000 over the cost two years ago, it was as conservative as the commissioners could have wished for considering rising costs and the addition of the new jail.

The commissioners awarded a road and bridge transport fuel bid for 5,000 gallons of diesel and 3,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline for $25,029 from Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro over a competitive bid of $25,438 from Cardie Oil of Tampa.

During a Dec. 31 payday meeting, County Clerk Carol Maggard said the regular county sales tax received from the state in December for collections in October totaled $46,342.

This brought the annual collection to a record high of $653,203 for 2012 compared to the previous 10-year high of $645,562, Maggard said.

The receipt for the special jail construction sales tax over the same period was $41,099, which Maggard said put the county a year ahead of the schedule to pay off the jail bonds.
