Break-in at Dale’s suggests little was taken

Dale Franz, owner of Dale’s Supermarket, 108 W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro, was surprised to learn that one or more individuals broke into his store sometime after closing Saturday or early Sunday morning.

“We didn’t even notice it this morning until one of the ladies went in to use the dressing room,” he said.

Hillsboro Police Chief Dan Kinning said no money was taken and nothing was tampered with, including the cash registers.

“From what we can tell all the cough syrups and medicines weren’t touched,” Franz said.

If anything, he said, the individuals who broke into the store might have taken some soft drinks or candy bars, but nothing else.

The one or more individuals who entered the store after hours did so by breaking a small window facing the alley, Kinning said.

“Whoever was in the store went back out the same window,” Franz said.

Kinning said two sets of footprints were discovered on the toilet seat as the intruders dropped down through the window. Whoever climbed through that 20-inch by 12-inch window couldn’t have been very big, Kinning said. He said the act seemed more like the work of kids than adults.

Franz said he plans to reinforce the new window by adding bars and also is going to upgrade his current alarm system.

“Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity near the store late Saturday night or on Sunday, is encouraged to call our office at 620-947-3440, or stop by the office at 414 N. Ash. St.,” Kinning said.
