With the theme “At the Hop,” the 82nd annual Marion County Fair promises to deliver old-fashioned fun mixed with new and familiar activities and events July 25 to 28 in Hillsboro.
Festivities officially begin Wednesday with the annual downtown parade at 6:30 p.m. followed by a pedal-tractor pull for kids, watermelon feed, rodeo and a free 1950s “sock hop” dance at the fairgrounds pavilion.
The free pedal-tractor pull is open to children ages 4 through 12. Each contestant will receive a free T-shirt, and the top three finishers in each age group will be eligible to compete at the 2012 Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. Pre-registration begins at 6 p.m. July 25, with the event starting at 7 p.m.
Kraft Rodeo Co. is returning with a two-evening rodeo Wednesday and Thursday nights beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets for one night or a two-night combination can be purchased at the arena ticket office. Prices are $6 for adults or $10 for both nights; children ages 6 to 12 will be $5. Children under age 5 are free with a paid adult ticket.
Friday night’s arena entertainment will feature a truck and antique tractor pull at 7 p.m. Registration of trucks and tractors begins at 5 p.m. with a drivers meeting to follow at 6:45 p.m.

The 40th annual Marion County Fair demolition derby starts at 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets to the popular event can be purchased at the arena ticket booth: $8 for adults and $6 for children ages 6 to 12. Children age 5 and under are free with a paid adult ticket.
The primary food vendor at this year’s fair is Lorenzo’s BBQ and Smoked Meat, serving from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. July 25-27.
The Marion County 4-H clubs will operate a concession stand in the 4-H building from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. the same evenings. J’s Tropical Sno will be offering a variety of sno cones nearby.
The Hillsboro Lions/Leo Club will be serving hamburgers, cheeseburgers, funnel cakes, popcorn, fried taters, drinks and more during evening fair events.
