Hillsboro High School?s only state qualifier from a year ago returns this spring to lead the Trojan tennis team in 2008.

Clay Shewey, who finished eighth in singles at the Class 3-2-1A tournament as a sophomore in 2007, returns taller and more experienced this spring.

Three varsity veterans return to lead the Hillsboro golf team in 2008. From left are Daniel Dick, Daniel Kunantaev and Justin Kent. Kunanteav placed fourth at state last season as a freshman and Kent placed 12th as a sophomore.

The Hillsboro golf team returns two-thirds of a triple threat that carried the Trojans to a regional championship and a fifth-place finish at the Class 3A golf tournament a year ago.

The sun may have set on one of the brightest eras in track and field at Hillsboro High School, but head coach Dennis Boldt does not see dark days ahead in 2008.

Particularly on the girls? side, the graduation of JuliAnne Chisholm, Hannah Marsh and Tina Frick marked the end of a four-year run that produced two state championships and two runner-up trophies.

Having graduated a core of six seniors that accounted for nearly two-thirds of the offense from last season?s 8-9 squad, and with a current roster of 14 players with 12 underclassmen, Hillsboro baseball coach Phil Oelke knows his Trojans are in a rebuilding mode this spring.

The Tabor College baseball team has two all-conference performers returning from last year. At left is Tyler Sizemore, a junior who earned honorable mention last year. On the right is senior Chris Brown, who earned second-team recognition.

The Tabor College baseball team was picked to finish seventh out of seven teams in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

But first-year head coach Chad Newhard has his players firing on all cylinders in the early going, and the Bluejays shot to the top of the standings in the first weeks of conference play.

The women?s tennis team has first-team all-KCAC and ?Player of the Year? Laurel Delamater (far left) back for her senior season. The men?s team brings back (from left, after Delamater) Chad Gayer, Shane Miller, Jason Reiswig, Aaron Friesen. Emerson Kochem. Kochem, a sophomore, earned all-KCAC first-team honors and was named ?Freshman of the Year.? Gayer and Friesen, both juniors, are second-team all-KCAC returners.

Entering the second year under coach Michael Hagen, the Tabor College tennis teams have their sights set on building on the foundations laid last year.

The men?s team qualified for regionals a year ago; the season ended with a loss to conference powerhouse Bethany.

Bluejay softball will show ‘significant improvement’

The 2008 season of Tabor College softball opened Feb. 27. The Bluejays are 1-9 so far, but have already tied last year?s total for victories.

Tabor won a total of one game a season ago?a 7-2 slugging of Saint Mary in late April.
