It was a dramatic individual effort to cap an impressive team performance.

Competing in the last field event of a long weekend, Goessel senior Garrett Hiebert heaved the javelin 195 feet, 7 inches to not only win a gold medal at the Kansas High School Track & Field Championships this weekend, but to set a new meet record record in the process.

Regionals is the one meet of the year when Hillsboro track coach Dennis Boldt could care less about team accomplishments.

So set aside the fact his girls? squad won the regional title by a 15-point margin over runner-up Sacred Heart at Cheney on Friday, and that his boys? team finished third.

Here?s what?s important: the girls qualified five different athletes in 10 individual events for this weekend?s state track in Wichita, plus a relay that includes a sixth athlete.

A tightly played contest in the early going unraveled toward the end, leaving Hillsboro with a 16-6 run-rule loss to Hoisington in the semifinals of the Class 3A regional tournament played Wednesday at Hoisington.

The day is coming when Hillsboro will defeat Southeast of Saline and earn a trip to the Class 3A state softball tournament.

But that day didn?t come Thursday.

For
the fifth time in five regional championship games between the two
schools, the maroon-clad Trojans came out on the short end against
their purple-clad namesakes.

Tabor inks three for ?07

Women?s Basketball?Haley Parsley, Crowell, has signed a letter of intent to play women?s basketball at Tabor College for the 2007-08 season.

Coach Shawn Winter said the team is ?excited that (Parsley) has decided to join our basketball program at Tabor.?

MHS, HHS 3rd best at state

At the Class 3A state golf tournament hosted by Cheney on Monday night at the Cherry Oaks course, Hillsboro golfers posted a 328?the evening?s third best team score.

The top four from Marion finished with a 328, too.

The girls? track teams from Marion and Hillsboro finished 1-2 while the boys placed second and fourth, respectively, at the Mid-Central Activities Associa?tion track meet at Marion on Friday.

Hillsboro and Marion dominated the field Monday at the Class 3A regional golf tournament held at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course.

With three players among the top four individual finishers, the Trojans combined for a four-man total of 316. Marion, with the No. 3, 5, 6 and 7 individuals, was seven strokes back at 323.

The Marion High School softball team defeated the Hesston Swathers Monday for the third time in seven days by a score of 9-7. But this time the win came in the first round of the Class 3A regional playoffs, at Marion.
