After winning the gold medal, Hannah Marsh (left photo) clears 10 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault to break her own school record of 10-0. Likewise, after clinching gold at 5-6, JuliAnne Chisholm (right photo) clears 5-8. She just missed at 5-9, which would have tied the meet record. These two events resulted in HIllsboro?s only gold medals, but the team did well in other events to win the title.

Neither a wearisome weather wait nor a blazing blonde from Burling?ton could derail the Hillsboro High girls from winning the Class 3A title this weekend at the Kansas High School Track & Field Cham?pionships in Wichita.

A 2 1⁄2-hour delay for rain and lightning midway through Saturday?s finale?with several key events still undetermined for Hillsboro?did little to dampen the Trojans? drive for their second title in three years and fourth straight top-two finish.

It was a dramatic individual effort to cap an impressive team performance.

Competing in the last field event of a long weekend, Goessel senior Garrett Hiebert heaved the javelin 195 feet, 7 inches to not only win a gold medal at the Kansas High School Track & Field Championships this weekend, but to set a new meet record record in the process.

Regionals is the one meet of the year when Hillsboro track coach Dennis Boldt could care less about team accomplishments.

So set aside the fact his girls? squad won the regional title by a 15-point margin over runner-up Sacred Heart at Cheney on Friday, and that his boys? team finished third.

Here?s what?s important: the girls qualified five different athletes in 10 individual events for this weekend?s state track in Wichita, plus a relay that includes a sixth athlete.
