HHS sweeps Lyons 8-6 , 4-2

Hillsboro overcame an early 6-2 deficit Friday at Lyons to beat the home team 8-6 and claim a sweep of their doubleheader.

The Trojans won the first game 4-2 behind the complete-game pitchng of Isaac Leihy.

The sweep capped a 4-0 week and boosted the surprising Trojans to a 9-5 record.

In Game 2 against the Lions, Trojan starter Jacob Edwards struggled on the mound. He gave up a run in the opening inning, thanks to a couple of Trojan errors, and shut out the home team in the second inning.

Hillsboro boys take team title

Scoring 38 points in the final three events, the surprising Hillsboro boys captured first place at the 14-team Conrad Nightingale Invita?tional in Halstead on Friday.

Hillsboro finished with 85 points to outpace runners-up Cheney with 73 and Halstead with 68.

The Trojans clinched the title with a first-place finish in the 4×400 in a time of 3 minutes, 36.59 seconds. Grant Schneider, Cody McMillen, Ishmael Morris and Nathan Vogel ran for HHS.

Justin Heidebrecht and Nathan Vogel coast a few strides beyond the finish of the 4×800 relay at the Conrad Nightingale Invitational in Halstead Friday. Heidebrecht edged Vogel at the line, but the HHS boys outpaced all comers in six events to claim the team title.

Fine running is often described as poetry in motion, and both Marion High School track teams ended up in the middle of the sonnet at Halstead Friday.

Led by Julia Zeiner, the girls scored 46 points, finishing just behind Remington (fourth, 491⁄2) and Conway Springs (fifth, 49) but just ahead of Hoisington (seventh, 41) among the 14 present teams.

The Hillsboro tennis team enjoyed its best outing of the season Friday, winning the Ellinwood Quadrangular.

The Trojans tallied nine points to edge Ellinwood and Ellsworth with seven each and Russel with one in the round-robin format.

Hillsboro?s Clay Shewey went 3-0 to win the No. 1 singles title and Jarod Hamm went 2-1 to win the No. 2 singles title.

Halstead losses drop Hillsboro to 1-3 for week and 5-5 for season

Hillsboro dropped both ends of a home-field doubleheader to Halstead on Friday, 9-6 and 14-6.

The losses capped a 1-3 week and evened Hillsboro?s season record at 5-5.

In the opener, Halstead erupted for five runs in the third inning against Hillsboro starter Jacob Edwards to grab a 5-2 lead.

Hillsboro ripped Hoisington for 28 runs on 28 hits last Tuesday, sweeping both ends of their doubleheader, 17-11 and 11-4, at the Sports Complex.

The Trojans scored nine runs in the first two innings of Game 1 to jump to an early 9-1 lead. Hoisington, aided by five hits and two Trojan errors, erupted for five runs against pitcher Jenesa Klose, to make the score 10-5 through 41⁄2 innings.
