More than 20 persons left the Marion City Council meeting Monday after protesters succeeded in persuading the council to research alternatives to allowing semi-truck parking in the Jex Addition.

City Attorney Dan Baldwin recommended that any new location should be discussed for potential conflicts by planning and zoning.

The Marion County Commis?sion Monday reassured renters of mobile home and camper lots at Marion County Lake by voting unanimously never to change use or zoning requirements on trailers moved there.

The only restrictions the commissioners said they would make would be for public safety and insurance requirements. Commissioner Bob Hein noted it would have to be a home in ?pretty bad shape? not to be insured somewhere.

The Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute provided a specially designed propane-fueled burn trailer. Firefighters wore bunker gear and air packs into the burn simulator, which reached temperatures that exceeded 500 degrees.

Darryl Brewer, representing D&L Enterprises, offered Monday at a Marion City Council meeting to upgrade seven acres he owns in southwest Marion for semi-truck parking if the city would share in 300 tons of rock needed at an estimated $7 a ton.

Members of the Florence City Council were told at their March 5 meeting that the premium for the city insurance policy will be $2,000 less than it was a year ago.

The city agent, Bill Hend?ricks, presented the council with spreadsheets detailing current insurance coverage.

The Marion County Commission Monday continued its push to clean up salvage yards, this time meeting with yard operator Danny King of Peabody and Zoning Director Bobbi Strait to see if King will be given a conditional-use permit to continue his business where it has been for years.

The commission focus on yards began with complaints that yard owners had vehicles parked on and spilling over onto county roads’ rights-of-way.
