Marion FFA earns top state CDE awards

Marion/Florence FFA chapter?s Agriculture Technology Management Team placed first overall at the state Career Develop?ment Event hosted by Kansas State University in Manhattan April 29.

Teams from Marion competed in several CDEs.

Individually for Marion, Nicholas Meyer placed first, Bret Voth second and Clint Kroupa placed fourth. Raleigh Kroupa was the other member of the state winning team.

Participants in this CDE were required to complete a metal inert gas welding skill using a print to correctly place and size the weld. They also completed a construction skill, an electrical wiring activity, a written test and a team activity over troubleshooting a starting problem on a small utility tractor.

Winning the state event qualifies Marion?s team to compete at the national Ag Mechanics CDE in conjunction with the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky., in October.

Marion?s Agronomy team placed sixth in the state CDE. Participants were required to grade three grain samples according to USDA standards, complete a seed analysis activity for three samples, identify 100 crop or weed samples, complete a written test over agronomic practices, and a practicum over agronomy.

Meyer, Kroupa and Morgan Wheeler competed for Marion.

The Dairy Cattle team of Taylor May, Daniel Hinton and Bryce Shults also competed at the state Dairy Evaluation event. They had to place eight classes of dairy cattle, give two sets of reasons and take a written test.

Austin Cogdill, Cade Harms, Nathan Baldwin, and Jeremy Hett competed in the state Entomology event. They had to identify 50 insect samples and take a written test.
