Jon Schallert, president of The Schallert Group Inc of Longmont, Colo., presented his case for establishing destination businesses to 65-70 participants during a 90-minute seminar Nov. 16 at the Marion Community Center. Schallert said a destination business draws customers from beyond the local market through “differentiation,” where the business identifies the qualities that sets it apart from others in a field by promoting the uniquenesses of its product, service, employees, business model, history, community connections or customers. Schallert said the advantage of a destination business is that it creates a clientele beyond the local market because it generates publicity and word of mouth buzz. The seminar was organized by Randy Collett, economic development director for the city of Marion. Several Marion participants had previously attended Schallert’s 14-step “BootCamp” for more in-depth training.
