African American settlements is focus of Harvey Co. event

The Harvey County Historical Museum & Archives invites the public to ?Free Did Not Mean Welcome? at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24.

The Museum is located at 203 N. Main, Newton. Carmaletta Williams of the Johnson County Community College will present the program about African American settlement in Kansas following Emancipation.

Although Kansas was a ?free? state, free did not necessarily mean welcome.

This program is provided by the Kansas Humanities Council, a non-profit organization with more than 30 years of experience promoting understanding of the history, traditions, and ideas that shape our lives and build community.

Admission to the Museum and to the program on the 24th is free and open to the public.
