Relay for Life adds Web site to enhance fundraising

Relay For Life of Marion County has an interactive Web site that highlights specific information about the event and cancer-related topics.

It can also be used to accept team registrations and collect credit card donations.

The Web site address is relayforlife.org/marioncoks.

This year?s event is June 19 and 20 at Warrior Stadium in Marion. Teams of eight to 15 people camp out overnight, each taking a turn walking laps around a track, socializing and participating in planned activities.

Relays around the nation have taken the fight against cancer online, and have seen increases in both participation and dollars raised. General cancer awareness is also a goal of Relay For Life.

?Relaying online is an easy way to spread the word about Relay For Life and ask for support,? said Sherry Soyez, volunteer Web site coordinator.

?Part of registration includes a personal Web page that can be used to tell stories,? she added. ?It can also be used to ask friends and relatives living far away to support your team by making an online donation,?

Once individuals form or join a team, they can share their personal reason for relaying, and send out e-mails to friends and family asking for support of the cause through participation or a monetary donation.

Top fundraising teams, individual fundraisers and sponsors are highlighted on the front page of the Web site. Teams can even keep track of their total donations raised from the site.

?This Web site will make a huge impact in the way we fight cancer,? said Janet Herzet, RFL committee chairwoman.
