Swathing alfalfa on a terraced field turned farming into an art form as Dean McGillvary follows the contours on a large field southeast of Hillsboro last week. McGillvary was driving a swather for Eldon Wiens, who is barely visible driving a second swather near the hedge row in the background. Wiens said he recalled the days when it took a full day to cut 10 acres with a horse-drawn mower. He said the contours slowed their progress, but the two-man crew still cut the entire 135-acre field in a day.
