Woman dies in two-vehicle collision at Ash Street and U.S. Highway 56

A Topeka woman has died, and a Marion woman is in critical condition, as a result of a two-vehicle collision that happened at about 10:25 a.m. Thursday at the junction of Ash Street and U.S. Highway 56, Hillsboro.

Joyce A. Smith, 82, was dead at the scene, according to information from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Smith?s passenger, Jean E. Case, 85, was flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

The accident occurred when Smith, driving a 2011 Buick LaCrosse, pulled out in front of an oncoming 2003 Peterbilt semi-truck, driven by Grant A. Unruh, 29, of Hesston, the KHP stated.

Smith was on U.S. Highway 56 heading westbound, and pulled out into oncoming traffic and was struck head on by the semi, which was traveling eastbound.

Both Smith and Case were wearing seatbelts.

A KHP reconstruction crew was at the scene Thursday afternoon.

No other details were available.

Smith was transported to Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion.
