A one-year contract extension for the superintendent was one of several personnel contracts approved by thehe Unified School District 410 Board of Education approved during its regular meeting Monday.
The board approved a contract extension for Superinten?dent Steve Noble through June 30, 2013.
Other contracts approved were:
— Bruce Major will continue his math position for the remainder of this school year but will begin as an instrumental music teacher effective August 2011.
— Juana Pritchard, Parents as Teachers language interpreter, will receive funds from the Early Childhood block grant.
— Sean Boller will accompany music students for contest.
The board also approved a new cell-phone policy for the district?s transportation handbook for all employees. Effective Jan. 11, all drivers must refrain from using cell phones or other hand-held electronic devices while transporting students.
Drivers with students may continue to use two-way radios for communication while driving.
The board agreed to contribute a USD 410 bus and driver, for the normal rate, to transport a tour group for the Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies at Tabor College May 7.
This tour is similar to one presented last year, in which participants are taken around to historical sites throughout the area.
Director Sandy Arnold shared her vision for changes to the Wiebe Media Center. The hope is to encourage students to read at little or no cost. One goal includes a shift in the organization of books from author-based to genre-based.
Although minor changes, such as more hot drinks available to students, are under way, major changes in the layout are not anticipated for the near future.
Jacob Wiebe, Hillsboro High School Student Council president, presented a proposal for changing the high school dress-code policy. It was suggested that students be allowed to wear shorts for the entire school year, within certain stipulations. No action was taken.
The agenda item concerning tax increment financing and Hillsboro Business Park was deferred for a lack of new information.
