Three area cross-country runners qualify for Class 3A state race

Three cross-country runners from the Free Press distribution area qualified for the Class 3A state meet Saturday at Lake Afton.

Emily Sechrist, freshman from Hillsboro, turned in the best individual performance by placing second in the girls? 4-kilometer race with a time of 15 minutes, 24 seconds — a mere two seconds behind the winner, Sarah Wright of Douglass.

For the boys, Jordan Hett of Marion placed fourth, covering the 5-k course in 17:10. Also qualifying was Josh Richert of Hillsboro, finishing 10th in 17:45. Patrick McCarty of Marion (11th, 18:05) and Jacob Cope of Marion (12th, 18:06) just missed the cut.

This year, the Class 3A state race will be run Saturday at Rim Rock Ranch near Lawrence.
