Tabor sweeps University of Saint Mary

Tabor swept the University of Saint Mary Thursday night. The Tabor women opened with a 73-54 victory, and the Bluejay men followed with a 78-67 win.

WOMEN?Tabor cruised to a 73-54 victory over the Spires Thursday night.

The Bluejays enjoyed a quick start out of the gate when Janelle Rust, Mallory Zuercher and Tena Loewen made consecutive baskets for a 6-0 lead. Two Spire baskets sandwiched a Zuercher three-pointer, then Loewen and Rust combined for seven straight points to give Tabor a double-digit, 16-4, lead at the 13:18 mark.

After the Spires twice drew within seven points, Tabor answered with a 9-0 run for a 32-16 advantage when Tonisha Dean scored at 5:01. That was the Bluejays? largest lead of the half, and Tabor enjoyed a 36-23 margin at intermission.

The Spires drained a three-pointer 10 seconds in to the second half and closed the gap to 38-32 at 17:56. Saint Mary was again within six, 43-37, with 15:33 to play. Zuercher answered with a three-pointer, and a three-point play by Rust boosted Tabor?s lead back to double figures, 49-39.

The teams traded three-pointers, then Hannah Paust scored a three-point play. The Spires scored twice before Paust made another basket, and Saint Mary drew within 57-48 with a basket with 8:53 to go. But Dean scored consecutive baskets to give Tabor a double-digit lead the rest of the way, and Tabor cruised to the 19-point win.

Rust led Tabor with 18 points. Zuercher added 14 and Dean 12.

MEN?The Bluejays defeated University of Saint Mary, 78-67, Thursday. Tabor held a narrow, 28-27, lead at halftime and outscored the Spires by 10 in the second half to claim the victory.

Andrew Thomas led Tabor with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Dewayne Biggs added 16 points and Lance Carter 12.

COMING?Tabor will host Friends Saturday in the regular season finale. The women are scheduled to play at 5 p.m., and the men will compete at 7 p.m.
