Tabor sweeps McPherson Saturday

The Tabor basketball teams earned two victories at McPherson Saturday night. The Bluejay women defeated the Bulldogs, 67-54, and the Tabor men followed with a narrow win, 76-74.

WOMEN?Tabor withstood a late Bulldog rally to win by 13.

The teams traded scores to open the contest, and Tabor led, 13-10, when Nikki Lewis made a three-pointer at the 13:44 mark. McPherson tied it at 15 with a three-pointer, but Tena Loewen scored six straight points for Tabor. Tonisha Dean followed with a three-pointer that put Tabor firmly in front, 24-15, with 6:08 left in the half.

When Janelle Rust followed another Loewen basket with a three-pointer, the Bluejays? margin was up to double figures, 29-17. Tabor?s lead dipped back to single digits, 33-24, after McPherson hit a three, but Dean made a three-pointer nine seconds later, and Tabor enjoyed a double-digit advantage the duration of the first half and led by 13, 39-26, at the break.

The Bluejays maintained that double-digit margin and led by 16, 54-38, with 9:00 left to play. But just when it appeared Tabor had things firmly under control, the Bulldogs scored 10 unanswered points, cutting Tabor?s lead to 54-48 with 5:09 remaining. With McPherson knocking at the door, Rust and Lewis took things into their own hands, scoring the next 11 points to give Tabor a 17-point cushion, 65-48, with 2:05 to go. McPherson outscored Tabor 6-2 in the last 1:03 for the final, 13-point margin.

Rust led all scorers with 19 points. Dean added 15, Loewen 14 and Lewis 13.

MEN?Tabor?s game at McPherson came down to the wire Saturday, but the Bluejay men pulled off the two-point victory.

Tabor took an early, 10-2 lead out of the gate, aided by two three-pointers from Nick Sauer and Robbie Samuel. But McPherson used two threes of its own to outscore Tabor 11-2 after that to take a slight lead.

Lance Carter, Andrew Thomas and Cameron Rust scored three consecutive baskets for a 19-13 advantage with 9:17 left before half. McPherson narrowed the gap to 21-19 before six straight points for Tabor pushed the Bluejay lead to eight. The teams traded baskets until Tabor extended the margin when Thomas, Sauer and Carter scored in succession for a 39-24 lead with 1:04 left before halftime. Two Bulldog threes closed the gap to 39-30 at intermission.

McPherson picked up where it left off by hitting another three right out of the break and later tied the game at 43. McPherson took its first lead of the half, 56-55, with a three-pointer with 11:05 to play. The score remained within three points the duration of the game.

Tabor trailed by two, 73-71, with 3:05 left in the game. Rust scored the tying basket at 2:49, and Dewayne Biggs nailed two free throws to put Tabor in front. McPherson made one of two free throws to close the gap to 75-74 at 1:20. Thomas made one of two free throws with 16 seconds left, then blocked the ensuing Bulldog shot. McPherson grabbed the rebound, but the second-chance attempt missed its mark.

Biggs scored a game-high 25 points. Carter added 12 and Sauer 10. Thomas grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his nine points.

COMING?Tabor will host Ottawa Thursday. The women?s game is set for 6 p.m. and the men?s game at 8 p.m.
