Tabor sweeps McPherson in final KCAC games before break

The Tabor College basketball teams swept McPherson Saturday. The women won, 67-56, and the men won, 87-67.

Women?Tabor and McPherson battled fairly evenly in the first half of Saturday?s contest, and each team led by as many as five points.

McPherson claimed the advantage early, but after a 12-12 tie, Tabor surged to a 19-14 lead. McPherson tied it at 19, before Kayla Wilgers pushed Tabor back in front with a three-pointer at 7:24. The Bluejays maintained the lead until McPherson tied the game at 34 with a basket with 20 seconds left in the half. Mikaelyn Dick made a three-pointer with 4 seconds remaining to give Tabor a 37-34 halftime lead.

The Bluejays burst out of the locker room with a 16-1 run to take their largest lead of the night, 53-35, when Taylor Janzen scored off a turnover at the 12:47 mark. Wilgers drained two three-pointers in a 38-second span, and Tabor kept its lead in double figures the rest of the way.

Wilgers scored a game-high 25 points, including 6-of-10 from three-point range. Tonisha Dean had 11 rebounds and Tena Loewen 10. Tabor outrebounded McPherson 42-31.

Men?Tabor did not trail by more than two points in Saturday?s 20-point victory over McPherson.

With McPherson in front 13-12, John Jedneak hit a three that ignited a 14-4 Tabor surge, the last nine points of which came courtesy of Justin Malan. The Bluejays increased their lead to double figures after that, and led by 19, 44-25, at halftime.

Tabor widened the gap with a run of 10 to start the second half, and the Bluejays led by 30, 62-32, when Malik Brooks hit a three-pointer. McPherson whittled Tabor?s lead to 20, 85-65, with 1:06 to play, and in the end, Tabor nailed down the 20-point victory.

Malan led Tabor with 17 points. Jedneak added 14, Brooks 13, Andrew Thomas 10 and Jake Arck 10. Thomas pulled down 10 rebounds as well. Tabor shot 56.7 percent from the field (34-60).

Coming?Tabor will resume play after Christmas break by hosting the Tabor Classic Jan. 2 and 3.
