Tabor splits home games against Southwestern

The Tabor basketball teams split their home games against Southwestern Thursday night. The Bluejay women fell, 81-72, but the men gained an 80-76 victory.

WOMEN?The Tabor women fell to 11th-ranked Southwestern Thursday, 81-72.

Southwestern jumped to an early 7-0 lead and surged to a double-digit, 19-5, advantage at the 14:11 mark.

The Moundbuilders maintained their lead and enjoyed a 23-11 advantage at 7:26. Tabor surged with an 8-0 run after that capped by a basket by Nikki Lewis with 4:47 left in the first half, narrowing the gap to 23-19. Southwestern, however, regained a double-digit lead, 31-21, with 1:28 to go, and led, 33-24, at the break.

Janelle Rust opened second-half scoring with a basket 14 seconds in, but Southwestern maintained the advantage and once again extended the lead to double figures, 39-28, with 17:35 left in the game. Rust answered with a three-pointer, but a Southwestern basket 30 seconds later extended the lead back to 10.

Four times the Bluejays drew within five points of the Moundbuilders, the final time being at the 9:14 mark when Lewis made a three-pointer for a 57-52 score. But Tabor could never gain the lead, and trailed 76-70 when Tena Loewen made a basket with 1:08 to go. The game ended with Tabor trailing by nine.

Rust led Tabor with 21 points. Lewis added 13, Mallory Zuercher 12 and Tonisha Dean 10. Loewen grabbed 11 rebounds.

With the loss, Tabor dropped to 5-2 in the KCAC, 10-7 overall. Southwestern remains unbeaten in conference play at 7-0, 15-3.

MEN?The Tabor men defeated Southwestern, 80-76. The Bluejays held a slight lead at halftime, 36-35, and outscored the Moundbuilders 44-41 in the second half to earn the victory.

Lance Carter had a double-double performance, leading Tabor with 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Andrew Thomas scored 19 points, and JT Nemit and Dewayne Biggs each added 12.

With the win, Tabor improved to 4-3 in the KCAC, 11-7 overall.

COMING?Tabor will host University of Saint Mary Saturday. The women play at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m.
