Tabor College Concert Choir to hold last concert of the year

The Tabor College Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Bradley Vogel, will perform its final concert of the academic year at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, in Richert Auditorium on the Tabor College campus.

The theme, “Lead, Kindly Light,” organizes a program of rich choral repertoire with sounds and texts of comfort and peace, and also vibrant psalms and spirituals of praise and encouragement.

“The music of this concert is either full of great energy, or of stunningly beautiful harmony,” Vogel said. “I organized the program around Dan Forrest’s beautiful setting of John Henry Newman’s poem, which led to a set of texts that speak of comfort and peace. And the music marvelously communicates comfort and peace.”

The concert opens with John Ness Beck’s energetic “Canticle of Praise,” and includes lively settings of the early American hymn, “The Eternal Gates,” and the spiritual, “I Got A Key.”

Featured also in the program is former director Jonah Kliewer’s setting of “In the Rifted Rock I’m Resting,” commissioned for the Concert Choir in 2004. The center of the concert features a cappella works with texts and music that illuminate the Light of heaven.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, marks the final performance of the choir under the direction of Vogel, marking the end of his 22-year tenure at Tabor College.
