Seven Marion athletes qualify for Class 3A state track meet

Competing at the Russell Class 3A regional meet, the Marion track and field team qualified seven athletes for state in nine events.

Tyler Palic led the boys’ team by qualifying in two events. He won the discus with a throw of 165 feet, 10 inches, and placed fourth in the shot put (45-3).

Marion recorded four third-place, state-qualifying finishes: Bryce Shults in the pole vault (13-6); Jack Schneider in the 200 (23.52 seconds); Colin Williams in the 1,600 (4:56.1); and Tyler Arocha, Zachary Stuchlik, Williams and Schneider in the 4×400 (3:35.9).

Williams also qualified with a fourth-place finish in the 800 (2:08).

Others scoring points for Marion were: Noah Dalrymple, tied for fifth in the high jump (5-8); and Schneider, fifth in the 100 (11.94).

Meanwhile, Marissa Jacobson was the girls’ only state-qualifier. She placed third in the 300 hurdles (50.13) and fourth in the long jump (16-41⁄4).

Jacobson scored points but did not qualify in the triple jump with a sixth-place finish (33-3), while Sam Richmond was fifth in the 400 (1:06.6).

Coming—Marion’s state qualifiers will compete at the state meet in Wichita Friday and Saturday.

Jacobson will kick off events Friday by running the 300 hurdles prelims at 11:10 a.m. Palic will throw the discus at 11:30, then Schneider will run the 200 prelims at 12:25 p.m. The boys’ 4×400 will race in the prelims at 1:15 p.m.

Saturday, Jacobson will long jump at 8 a.m., and Shults will pole vault at 8 a.m. Palic will throw the shot put at 9:45, then Williams will run the 1,600 at 2:05. Williams will run the 800 at 5:30.
