The Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Retail Promotions Committee tried something new Saturday by having an evening ?Spirit of the Season? parade on Main Street.
The committee offered $50 in prize money for the best organizational and religious floats, said Izzie Klassen, Chamber office manager.
The Hillsboro Girl Scouts took first for best organizational float and Zion Lutheran Church for religious theme.
?The Scouts decorated a Christmas tree with lights and messages,? Klassen said, ?and 20 or more Girl Scouts sat around the tree singing Christmas carols.?
The church float was also decorated with festive lights, she said, and members of the congregation sang carols to spectators.
The parade also included the American Legion Color Guard, a city fire truck, vehicles from Midway Motors and Wright?s Auto Sales, classic cars, costumed animals, other float entries and a horse and buggy decorated for Christimas.
Most of the parade participants tossed candy to more than 100 spectators standing along Main Street as temperatures dipped into the low 40s.
Klassen and Sheryl Lehr judged the float divisions.
