Behind 19 points from Kayley Heerey, the Marion High School girls basketball team defeated Hoisington 59-43 Friday. Heerey scored five 3-pointers, including a pair that helped pace the Warriors to an 18-8 run in the second quarter. Marion led 39-16 at halftime.
Julia Zeiner and Lindsay Hett each finished with 13 points. Zeiner scored six on three 2-pointers in the first quarter, lifting Marion to a 21-8 lead through the first quarter.
The MHS boys lost by a final score of 61-47. Hoisington outscored the Warriors 23-17 in the first frame on the strength of 10 Justin Axman points. Axman hit two 2-pointers and two 3-pointers, and Jerad Powell nailed two triples in the opening period.
Marion closed the gap to 32-29 before halftime, as Wil Case notched six of the Warriors 12 second quarter points. Case hit a 3-pointer and converted a 3-point play.
Hoisington outscored Marion 17-12 in the third quarter and held the Warriors to just six points in the fourth to secure the win. Elliot Hett led MHS with 12 points, and Eric Vogel totaled 10.
