MEMORIAL DAY ACTIVITIES IN MARION COUNTY, MAY 29

Communities in Marion County will be observing Memorial Day on Monday, May 29, by honoring soldiers who died serving their country. In addition to organized events, residents also will visit the graves of soldiers in remembrance of the fallen. The following towns are planning special tributes.

HILLSBORO

Hillsboro American Legion Post 366 is having its Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. with Mayor Delores Dalke as the guest speaker. The ceremony will begin with the color guard advancing and the Sons of the American Legion raising the American flag. Following the ceremony, the Hillsboro American Legion organization is having a steak dinner for $15 starting at noon.

MARION

Monday’s Memorial Day Service in Marion is at 9:30 a.m. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 6958 will decorate the memorial.

PEABODY

The Memorial Day service begins at 10 a.m. Monday at Prairie Lawn Cemetery. The program includes advance of colors, music, “Amazing Grace,” Colors to half mast. The invocation and benediction will be by James Pohlman, preaching elder. Colors to full mast will be by the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Sponsors include American Legion Post 95, Elmer S. Madsen VFW Post 6229, American Legion Post 95 Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion Post 95. Others assisting in the service are Peabody-Burns Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America and Peabody-Burns High School band.

FLORENCE

Three Memorial Day services are planned for Monday at or near Florence. The first service will be west of Florence at Mount Calvary Cemetery beginning at 9:30 a.m. Father Darrin May is the guest speaker. Cedar Point Cemetery, south of Cedar Point, will be the site of a 10 a.m. service. Benny Holtzclaw of Cedar Point is the guest speaker. North of Florence at Hillcrest Cemetery, a ceremony begins at 11 a.m. with pastor Jeff Lee of the Florence United Methodist Church serving as guest speaker. Following the service, John McKay, Post 308, is inviting everyone to the post for a casual lunch.

PILSEN

Pilsen Cemetery is having a Memorial Day service at 9:30 a.m. with arrangements by the Pilsen Cemetery Board. In the event of bad weather, the service will be moved to the Pilsen Community Center. Military honors will be presented by Gilbert-Poppe Post 347 of the American Legion in Lincoln­ville. Welcome remarks will be by William E. Benda. The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Deanna Klenda and, “God Bless America,” will be sung by the assembly. Benda will be reading the veterans honor roll. A rifle salute will be presented by Post 347 and Taps is being sung by Mary (Konarik) Griffith. Adam Makovec will play the trumpet.

LINCOLNVILLE

American Legion Gilbert-Poppe Post 347 will be hosting Memorial Day services at Lincolnville Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. in Lincolnville. Pastor Stahlecker will be the speaker and Adam Makovec will play taps. The post is also honoring veterans at Pilsen at 9:30 a.m. during services there.

LEHIGH

Lehigh is having its annual Memorial Day Antique Tractor and Engine Show at the city park on Main Street. The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday. A parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. with lunch available.
