Marion kicked off the Cougar Classic tournament Thursday with a pair of victories. The girls defeated Wakefield, 47-29. The boys defeated Solomon, 72-57.
Girls—The Marion girls opened play in the Cougar Classic tournament with a 47-29 victory over Wakefield Thursday.
Kourtney Hansen scored eight points in the first quarter to lead Marion to a 15-4 lead by the first break.
But the Bombers increased scoring in the second period, outscoring the Warriors, 14-10, thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers. Meanwhile, Alli Molleker contributed six of Marion’s 10 points, and the Warriors led, 25-18, at halftime.
Marion regained a double-digit advantage with a 14-5 third-quarter effort. Five Warriors scored in the quarter, led by Sam Richmond with six points. Marion enjoyed a 39-23 advantage at the final break.
Six of Marion’s final eight points came at the free-throw line, and the Warriors cruised to the 18-point win.
Hansen led all scorers with 12 points. Molleker scored 10.
Boys—The Marion boys recorded their highest point total of the season in a 72-57 thrashing of Solomon Thursday in the Centre tournament.
Solomon, however, held the upper hand in the first half, leading 20-17 after one quarter, and 30-27, at halftime.
Marion turned the tables in the third quarter, outscoring the Gorillas, 24-12, nearly doubling its halftime score, to take a 51-42 lead into the final break.
The Warriors continued to build their lead with a 21-15 fourth-quarter effort, leading to the 15-point win.
