The Marion basketball teams lost their second-round games of the Cougar Classic Friday night. The boys lost to Elyria Christian, 52-42, and the girls lost to Centre, 40-36.
Boys?Marion got off to a slow start in Friday?s 10-point loss.
With the Warriors trailing 5-3, Elyria ended the first quarter with a 7-1 run to enjoy a 12-4 margin at the first break.
Marion came alive offensively in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles, 20-10. Mason Pedersen ignited an 15-4 Warrior run with a breakaway layup, and by the time Bret Voth made his second three-pointer of the period, Marion led, 19-16. The teams traded scores the duration of the half, and Marion led, 24-22, at intermission.
Following a 26-26 tie, Elyria used a 10-1 run to take the lead for good. The third quarter ended with Marion trailing, 39-31.
Elyria built its lead to 46-31 before Nicholas Stuchlik scored Marion?s first point of the quarter at the charity stripe with 4:06 left in the game. Voth scored Marion?s first field goal with 2:21 to go, and the closest Marion got after that was within nine.
Girls?Marion led by as many as seven in Friday?s four-point loss to Centre.
The teams played each other even through the first quarter, battling to a 9-9 tie. Marion gained five points from Erika Hess, while Centre was led by Shelby Makovec with seven.
Marion outscored the Cougars, 10-3, to start the second quarter, taking their largest lead of the game, 19-12, when Hess scored at the 3:10 mark. Centre closed to within 20-18 when Shelby Pankratz scored off a steal, and the half ended with Marion in front, 22-18.
With Marion leading, 25-20, after Hess drained a three, Centre ended the third quarter with a 12-1 burst for a 32-26 lead heading into the final quarter. Hess left the game with an injury during the third quarter and did not return.
Kourtney Hansen and Julia Hall combined for seven consecutive points, boosting Marion back in front, 33-32, with 3:40 to play. A Warrior missed shot and a turnover allowed Centre to regain the advantage when Makovec scored with 1:43 to go.
The Warriors missed the front end of two one-and-one opportunities in the final minute. Makovec, meanwhile, chipped in a pair of free throws, and Carlotta Benning extended Centre?s lead to 38-33 with a basket with 14.5 left to play. Bailey Robson drained a three-pointer with 7.0 left on the clock to bring Marion within two, but Makovec sealed Centre?s victory with a pair of free throws.
Coming?The Cougar Classic will conclude Saturday. The Marion boys will play in the seventh-place game at 3:30 p.m. and will face either Centre or Rural Vista. The girls will play Rural Vista in the third-place game at 5 p.m. The Centre girls, meanwhile, will face Elyria Christian in the championship at 5 p.m.
